What's the most expensive country you have been to and was it worth it?

Bhutan. Yes.

Switzerland and yes, it was worth it.

"Expensive" is a relative term. How much a person spends on a trip depends on that person's particular travel style. "Luxury" travel to a so called inexpensive destination can cost way more than "frugal" travel to an otherwise expensive country.

That said, here are some of the most expensive countries (listed in no particular order) I've visited:

Iceland

All were "worth it".

While RoamsAround is correct for most countries, Bhutan has a minimum amount per day that you have to spend, otherwise no visa.

Also, if you want to eat and drink in Switzerland, you are going to find the prices high unless you bring a picnic with you.

Both worth it!

Well I stayed with friends so it wasn't too terrible for me, but I think Switzerland would be considered the "most expensive country" I have visited myself. And yes we 'picniced' & cooked at home & ate street foods & hit farmers markets & drank local wine to mitigate expenses.

And YES, it was most definitely worth every last CHF!!!

The Maldive's and it was totally worth it. Easily one of the most amazing holiday destinations in the world.

Switzerland, not worth it in my opinion. I would rather stay in Germany or Austria.

The US, if that counts. I haven't seen any other country where hostel bunks routinely start at $50/nt.

Otherwise, Iceland is not cheap. Food- even convenience store food- is pricy. And transportation is also pricy.

Forgot to add, though, that those expensive hostels are in world class cities like NYC and Boston. So definitely worth it. And I would go back to Iceland in a heart beat- just with more money!

Boston is super pricey for lodging.

Bergen, Norway.

Extremely high cost for food. We went out to a coffee shop (5 of us) and minimal order of coffee, pastries was close to $160. I stayed with my daughter (they were living there) and her family so that wasn't an issue.

Why do you ask?

Try to find a hotel in downtown Seattle in the summer time. You might think the most expensive is the good ole USofA.

I would first define "expensive". It all depends on our budget and what you get for with your money.

in some destinations, the accomodation can be expensive, but then food and drinks can be affordable and viceversa.

In my opinion, Dubai is a very expensive city.

I was in Angola on business and at that time Angola had the highest per diem of all countries. Still has. Number 2 is Denmark, number 3 Switzerland.
