Monica,
I was browsing the forums when I came across your journal- thank you so much! I'm taking my first solo trip to Italy and was nervous, but after reading your journal I am much more at ease. I'm also staying La Calcina so was very happy to read your post regarding it.
thanks again!
Celeste

Monica, sounds like you have a great trip! I'm glad to hear your first solo trip was a success - there is definitely something nice about not having to worry about the other travellers...
I think you did learn one important thing about travelling alone - make sure you have multiple ways of getting money. When you travel with others, you have a bit of leeway if your ATM/CC doesn't work, etc. But when travelling alone, you don't have that fallback. I always bring 2 ATMs (from 2 different banks) and 2 CCs (from 2 different companies) just in case, but only use 1 each unless there's a problem.
Cel128 - is this your first solo trip? Or just your first solo trip to Italy?

this will be my second solo trip- my first was to Lampedusa (an island off the coast of Africa, but is part of Italy). I admit I chose a biggie, but I'm really glad I did. I can't believe how many years I've wasted waiting for others to be able to join me. Just goes to show you that the fear of doing something almost always is worse than actually doing it.

Isn't that the truth. Like the saying "it's better to have loved and lost, than never to have loved at all," I think it's safe to say "It's better to have travelled and been disappointed, than never to have travelled at all."

Hi everyone,
I haven't checked Fodors in a week or so. Celeste, I hope my journal helped you. It was WONDERFUL traveling alone. Enjoy your time alone and soak in everything possible on your trip. La Calcina is great! Have dinner there one night - a little pricey but excellent food and fabulous service! Just down the "street" is La Zattare - great for pizza, a glass of wine and great canal views. If you have any questions, email me at mjpileggi @ adelphia.net.
Have a GREAT time!!
