Yes, it is safe provided you take reasonable precations and don't visit war zones. How much you can carry depends on you and your luggage - I take a 22 inch two-wheeler that weighs in at airports at 10-11 kilos, plus a small day pack.

Where do you want to go?
Sure it is "safe" to travel by yourself in most situations.
What to keep in mind... have enough money, keep your travel documents safe, stay in central locations so you can get around easily.
As far as what to pack, it depends where you are going, what you will need beyond the basics (you always need a passport, money, debit/credit card, any personal prescriptions, etc.).
All these questions would have a different answer if you are going solo to Paris or Amsterdam for a week, than if you are spending time at the beach in Jamaica or Mexico (for example).
