Galapagos - Help me help my Dad

I posted this in the Latin America area, but then saw this section and thought it was worth a re-posting, sorry if you already read it and thanks if you already replied.

My father is in his early 60s, widowed and finally ready to go and do something fun. He has always wanted to go to the Galapagos Islands and see the wonders of nature via boat. He would fly down there and then what?

He is older so he can only do moderate/intermediate level stuff, is all about the nature, animals etc. But he is going alone. He would not want to be trekking with a bunch of teens, but he does not want to be on an "old people only" tour as he calls them.

Can someone recommend the best time to send him and what tour guide or groups activities and clients best fit his needs?

I have several friends who have travelled with OATS -
Overseas Adventure Travel and have been very happy with that company

Might check into that

On the otherhand- I have several female friends who would also love a travel partner - maybe we could be matchmakers - just kidding of course

My girlfriend (early 60's) went on an Elderhostel trip that included the Galapagos. That might be just perfect for your Dad. He'll likely be one of the younger people. And they take small groups and have an educational focus. Check it out!

Some people really like OAT. Others, including me, wouldn't travel with them again if it were free.

You can only visit the Galapagos on a boat, I believe, so you need some kind of tour group. Early sixties isn't that old these days, if you're in good health. Does he have any disabilities? If not, almost any group tour is likely to work for him. Does he want to go budget or high-end?

what did you not like about OATS?

I have friends who just came back from Costa Rica with them and they loved it

If you search on OAT on the Asia board you'll find a number of threads on OAT, including fodors.com/forums/threadselect.jsp?fid=27&tid=34766572

I was going to suggest OAT too. My family members have traveled with them repeatedly and had great experiences. The only problem with them is the single supplement. He can opt to get a roommate (a stranger) to alleviate it.
