shoes for Machu Picchu

Hi,
Will a good pair of running shoes work or should I really have light hiking boots? Thanks

Depends on what you're doing. If taking the train and spending the day at MP, running shoes are fine. If doing the 2- or 4-day hike (which I didn't do), I'd think that hiking boots would definitely be preferable.

If you don't have ankle problems, running shoes are fine unless you are hiking up Huanu Picchu (may have spelled it wrong) as it is very steep and rocky.

I would take hiking boots for 2 days at MP. It rained part of the day while we were there last week and those wet Inca steps would get very slippery in running shoes. I was very glad to have my hiking boots, not only for MP, but also for other archeological sites like Pisac, Tipon, Sacsayhuaman, Ollantaytambo ruins, etc.

You can find light weight trail runners with nonslip rugged soles if you don't want the extra bulk of hiking boots.
