RIO - Where To Stay?

totally confused about which beach area to stay for safety, value and ease of getting around. Advice anyone?

Honestly, there's not a great deal of difference between Copacabana and Ipanema vis a vis safety. Arpoador, between the two is a good choice. Beaches are cleaner in Ipanema.

I thought the area around Copacabana was seedier than that around Ipanema and Leblon. Both Ipanema and Leblon are much more "upscale" in terms of restaurants, shops, etc.

Your perception. That's not true of Copacabana as a whole.
