plsflgd, we visited both the Brazilian and Argentinian sides of Iguazu Falls two years ago. We stayed at Hotel Das Cataratas on the Brazilian side. Although it was very beautiful and allowed us to have very convenient access to different points of the falls, it was expensive, as you noted. On the Argentian side, we stayed at the Sheraton, the only hotel within a few steps of the boundary of the national park, and with a view of the falls. Although the entire falls are outstandingly large and beautiful, we thought that if/when we returned, we'd visit only the Argentinian side. We did a boat trip under the falls, hiked along the many trails that allowed access to many views of the falls, and took a combined park train trip with a walk to the outstanding "Devil's Throat". (On this trip, we visited other places in Brazil, so the visa was needed for more than the falls. But we said that we wouldn't get a visa just to return to the falls)
For what it's worth, if we were in your shoes, we'd probably opt to stay on the Argentinian side, at the Sheraton, if possible, and be able to make optimum use of time to really explore and enjoy the falls. We agreed that the Argentinian side was our favorite.
Hope these ideas are a help. Enjoy your trip!
