Lake District - Early October - Too Early?

It depends on the year really. It also depends on where. The northern part of the lakes (Pucón) should be better than further south (Puerto Varas).But you can get rain at any time in the south. If it is part of a longer trip, you can always check the weather when you are here. If it looks good, take a comfortable overnight bus south. If it doesn't look good, head north to La Serena and the Elqui valley.

We were in the lake district in Oct 2008 and the weather was Ok. In Pucon (great pace BTW!) our intention was to continue south the TDP but we checked out the weather locally and were advised not to go. We opted to cross into Argentina to san martin de los andes and then drove south through the seven lakes area to Bariloche. It was a great drive but we did experience some bad weather on teh way (i.e. snow and rain).
As Huentetu point out, in these days of climate change the change in seasons really does vary from year to year wherever you are in the world.
