Couldn't pass up price, what to do/where to go, help!
Hello all, I got what I thought was a great price from DFW (Dallas)to EZE(Buenos Aires), $193 all in, so I told my wife to just go for it. Never been before so I need your valuable thoughts. We will be arriving on the morning of Jan 25th and leaving on Tuesday Feb 2nd. She's heard that the falls and glaciers are spectacular. Can I do both of those as well as enjoy BA in that time period. Are flights the best way to get to those locales?
Are the glaciers still awesome in late January? Suggested tours, or do-it-yourself? Fly-in fly-out same day, or is a stay-over necessary?
Good time of year for the falls? Suggested tours, or better to do it all on our own? Fly-in early fly-out late same day ok, or need to stay?
BA suggestions for our time there?
Any help appreciated. Thanks.

Firstly with only 7 days flying is definitely the way to go. I can't comment on tour operators as we did it all ourselves (but had a lot more time). I would say however that it will be a lot cheaper to book flights and hotels at the various location yourself but using a TA does add a lot to the convenience aspect.
To my lasting regret we did not visit the glacier area which apparently is spectacular (I think year round). In view of the distance I think it would be preferable, if not necessary to stay overnight.
Iguazu is spectacular and well worth an overnight visit. If you can try and fit in a visit to the Brazilian side as well as the Argentine as it provides a much different and IMHO better experience. It s possible to do it in one day but it will be rushed.
Recommendations for BA would include La Boca, Palermo, Recolleta, Puerto Madero San Telmo, but quite honestly, the range is so great you could easily spend your whole time there.
My advice is to sort out where you want to go before you arrive and work out a schedule, otherwise it is easy to miss a lot. Likewise with eating research your restarants here and elswhere before you go, the choice is enless and the quality excellent (hope you like beef!!

Spend five days in Buenos Aires and two days at the Falls. I'd travel in October (spring) since the weather has been great during my previous travels there at that time.
I now plan to travel in March/April 2010 (the end of summer). ...just hope it is not too hot and humid.

Thanks for the replies so far.
What do you think of spending Mon afternoon thru Thursday in BA, flying to Igazu Friday morning returning friday night, flying to Moreno glacier Saturday morning returning to BA on Monday, fly home on Tuesday.
Is one day at the falls not enough to do a good walk around and look at them?
Thanks again.....

We spent two nights at Iguazu Falls and thought that was the perfect amount of time. (Arrived late in the afternoon and walked around a little, then had the entire next day to explore the Falls. Spent another night and then left the next morning.) I wouldn't want to go unless I could spend at least one night.
Remember that checking out of the hotels, going to the airport, checking in for the flight, etc. takes up a lot of time. Personally, I'd skip the glaciers this trip.

Congratulations on that fare !!
I agree with maryanntex... If you want to see something closer and not an overnight, you can see Colonia , Uruguay in a day trip and or go to Tigre, Delta for a day trip. You would be back in town for dinner .. :- )

I would say there s time to make this trip more complete Having paid such a low rate to come to Argentina, means to say you are very lucky. So do as much as you can.
2 nights in Calafate; if you get good times for the flights and 1 night in Iguazu if you can afford the Sheraton.
2 nights in Calafate: means a full day for the glaciers and a half day more for the Perito Moreno in private, enough
If you are not interested in the minitrekking it will be perfect.
1 night in the Sheraton means a lot more than you really need.

Hello all,
rhkkmk, yes I realize that it is summer in January in argentina, not sure why you asked that, some insight please. Are the glaciers not doable at that time of the year?
Milla, thank you for your response as well. So it would be doable to fly in to Calafate, spend day the day looking around there, than the next day do the mini trekking, than fly out the following morning? Appreciate your help.
Thanks,
Dan

Glaciers are glaciers because they are there year round.
They are probably MORE doable in summer.
Given the good airfare I would head for El Calafate, Perito Moreno on the Argie side of Patagonia, and spend at least one overnight.
Did the Chilean glacier side last January it was fantastic.

Hello all,
Some have asked about the fare I got. My wife heard about a fare for $243 from DFW to EZE somewhere in an online forum. I saw the price but didn't know if I could get the time off of work. The next day the fare went down to $193 including tax, so I went for it. It is on American from Dallas to Mexico CIty, than transfers to Mexicana for the trip to BA. The only issue with the itinerary is on the way back there is a very long layover in Mexico City, like 12 hours. For that price though, I figured I could handle the layover.
Speaking of fares, what is a good fare from BA to Calafate?

But if you are interested in the ministrekking you will have to change the order and probably pay sth more for a private service. But it is possible even with 2 nights. Bear in mind that the plane to come to buenos aires has to leave Calafate as late as possible.
