Actually answer to your question also depends on your choice of taste and budget. Ptarmigan Bar and Grill & Marx Bros Cafe can be good options around downtown. Search about them and check if they suit your needs.

Thanks for raising the question, 50states. I'm interested in this, too. Love fresh halibut and salmon dishes, some game. Want to know especially about the mid-$$ range in Anchorage and Fairbanks, and down the Kenai Peninsula.

I was in Anchorage in December of '09 and at that time there were 2 restaurants that I would recommend. The Glacier Brewery seemed to be the place to meet and greet and there was a line to get in. As the name would indicate, they had very nice brews and the food was well above average.
Simon and Seaforts: Everyone in our group thought this place was world class. Those who ordered the halibut cheeks entree were especially happy.
There are some places that have Reindeer sausage which I found quite tasty.

I agree with Orso. Their smoked salmon chowder was lick-the-bowl good.
Also, with a car, a wonderful out of the way restaurant is Southside Bistro. I have been here 3 times and it never fails to impress. Check out their Trip Advisor reviews: http://www.tripadvisor.com/Restauran...ge_Alaska.html

My one and only experience with Glacier Brewhouse left me with the impression of too much emphasis on the brews than on the food and good service. It was almost an attitude of "we're so cool. Be glad you're here."
Moose’s Tooth has exceptionally good pizza. Be aware that they don't take reservations and that the place is hugely popular. So...come early to get seating.
In Seward, I like Rays Waterfront on the small boat harbor. Try to get a window seat if you can. http://rayswaterfrontak.com/

In Anchorage, the food at Simon and Seafort's is pretty good; the view is terrific.
Our fave "off the beaten path" restaurant in Anchorage is Aladdin's, some of the best Middle Eastern food we've had anywhere, and a great family-run operation. In a strip mall on Old Seward Highway - http://www.aladdinsalaska.com/
At the next signal south (Old Seward and International) is IMO the best burger in Alaska, at the Arctic Roadrunner. Get a Kodiak Islander and an order of onionrings pieces, and go sit next to the creek and look for salmon swimming by on their way to sex and death. Plenty of Alaska kitsch inside, but the burgers are the real deal.
On the same "old time locals" place, got to mention the Lucky Wishbone up on E. Fifth on the east edge of downtown. Good burgers, very good chicken, milkshakes to die for.
And one more old-time place, Club Paris downtown. Great traditional steakhouse. Bring your own flashlight.

@POIson - thanks for the list...yes thumbs up for Glacier Brewhouse and we did not try the two you mentioned in Seward area..we went for Ray's waterfront on day one (tasty but portions are low) and a new place called Woody's Thai (this place is a gem for Thai food in Seward!) I was skeptical but we loved it..heard about the places you mentioned but did not get a chance to try.
