You you will first have to give us more info: "medium price" doesn't tell us anything - what is you actual budget per night? When? - time of year affects rates. How many people? What sort(s) of accommodation? B&B, hotel, rental cottage/apartment, hostel?

Then we can help more.

In Ballater we stayed at: https://www.thegordonguesthouse.com/
Wonderful host and right across from the old train station where Queen Victoria used when she went down the road to her house.

walking distance??? Is that 10km or 15km?

Do you need a car park? This is critical to finding accomodation in York. If you have a car you need a car park.

We are going in May 2020 -6 adults and no car.
We have a booking at the Old School House - the Gordon is not available.
Walking distance is less than 30 min walk.
Thanks for your prompts. Just looking for others experiences in that area.

I tried to look it up. There is a Old School House in Hutton le Hole which is miles away so I guess not there (strangly my father in law went to school there).

Sorry not in Booking.com so cannot advise.

>>There is a Old School House in Hutton le Hole<<

I'm pretty sure the OP means the Old School house in Ballater.

HOWEVER -- what do you plan on doing in Ballater without a car?? And how are you getting there?

For York -- you still need to give a us a budget . . . (Anything in central York will be walking distance to the Minster, either within the city walls or just outside them)

Agreed, 30 minutes is fine within the walls (probably less).
