Favorite town in Lake District?
My husband and I have 8 days in the Lake District-staying in Grasmere and have a week pass on the bus. What is your favorite Lake District town? Any hikes (2-8 miles, easy or moderate) from there??

Keswick - neat regional town -pencil in its Pencil Museum - this area used to produce graphite and made pencils. There is a footpath over an abandoned railway line that makes a lovely walk - totall flat!

For walks of varying lengths, have a look at:

As far as towns to stay in go, it depends on what you want. Tiny B&B where you eat in at night, lots of those. Town with a good choice of restaurants, hotels and B&B's? Ambleside, Bowness and Windermere.
