Favorite town in Lake District?

My husband and I have 8 days in the Lake District-staying in Grasmere and have a week pass on the bus. What is your favorite Lake District town? Any hikes (2-8 miles, easy or moderate) from there??

Keswick - neat regional town -pencil in its Pencil Museum - this area used to produce graphite and made pencils. There is a footpath over an abandoned railway line that makes a lovely walk - totall flat!

We love Hawkshead village.

We bussed to Hawkshead yesterday. Absolutely beautiful and especially enjoyed Beatrix Pottery Gallery!

I was going to say Keswick, Pal. You stole my idea!

Ambleside. I'm biased because my niece lives there, but I do like it there. Plenty of walks from there.

Great minds....

Every town I've been in in the Lakes is nice -even Windermere-useful for folks going by rail as it is the railhead for the Lakes.

For walks of varying lengths, have a look at:

As far as towns to stay in go, it depends on what you want. Tiny B&B where you eat in at night, lots of those. Town with a good choice of restaurants, hotels and B&B's? Ambleside, Bowness and Windermere.

Thanks everyone. Spent a rainy day today in Keswick and enjoyed. We are staying in Grasmere, and are looking for day trips to a quaint town (on the bus route)

Hi Pam09. I hope you get to go back to Keswick and walk up to the Castlerigg stone circle (on better weather day). Or perhaps Ambleside to visit Dove Cottage and get a slice of gingerbread?
Have fun!
