How ling to stay in Newport, RI?
We're going to Newport, Rhode Island in early October. I'm aware of the mansions and Cliff walk. What else should we see or do? How many days should we stay? We are flexible on arrival, but must leave Oct. 5 for a stay at timeshare in Cape Cod.

A couple of days ought to be fine. It might be a bit cool to be on the water. One mansion per day is all I can do without getting visual (and historical detail) overload. Shops, a short train ride, tour the fort, the historic synagogue, Cliff Walk, drive the coast, sailing ship ride, Tennis Hall, eat well,........

I would give it three days, two nights.
Arrival day -- Cliff Walk to get the kinks out, historic district downtown (don't just spend your time on Thames Street, please)
Day 2 -- a mansion in the morning and a mansion in the afternoon
Day 3 -- drive to Cape via Tiverton and Little Compton, RI, and New Bedford, MA. Much of New Bedford is rust belt industrial, but the Whaling Museum and the Seaman's Bethel are both absolutely worth it.
It's only about an hour from New Bedford to the middle of the Cape, so you have plenty of time to sightsee on the way.
A good GPS is critical in the scenic parts of RI and SE Massachusetts. If you find and drive through Westport Point and Padanaram, you won't be sorry.
