Road Trip - South Florida to Outer Banks (I-95)
We are palnning a family road trip from West Palm Beach, FL to the Outer Banks. We are traveling with three very small children (2 1/2, 1 1/2, and 3 months). I need recommendations for good stops where we can eat, stretch our legs, run around, and stay overnight. Parks, playgrounds, pools, attractions, etc. The kids need to be able to burn off some steam to last for the whole road trip Any kid friendly recommendations are greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

With small kids this could be a 2 overnight trip. Are you staying on the OBX? Just for a "measure" from Pawley's Island (just below MB) to OBX it's an 8 hour drive. So theoretically you could spend your second night near MB.

The I-95 Exit Guide is a good resource. http://www.i95exitguide.com/

Ocracoke Island, is a must see. One of the most serene, picturesque spots I've encountered. Is also considered one of the best beaches in the U.S. The ferry ride just adds to the experience. My children have always enjoyed the ferry ride over.
The quaint, little town reminds me of those normally only found in New England.
Have a great trip! ")

I am curious why the OP has chosen OBX with such young children. It is a LONG way, the beach IS beautiful, but so are a whole lot of other ones closer, and easier to access. These children are not going to remember this. It's fine if it's for the parents, of course.

Thanks for the info so far.
We will be meeting a bunch family from NY and NJ and will all be renting one house for a week the week. It's not so much about the beach (since we have one less than five minutes from our home) but just a fun visit with aunts, uncles, cousins, etc.

I gave you the time above to drive from the MB area to OBX so you may be able to gauge from that. I don't think going over to I95 would benefit you at all for OBX unless you do it from WPB to Charleston, and then start up the coast on Route 17, which is a good 4 lane road all the way to Wilmington.
Charleston to MB is about 2 hours for a gauge.

It takes me most of a day to drive from Charleston to Kitty Hawk. The speed limits are low in those small towns. Mind them, believe me . I love that ferry, but it makes the travel day longer. Just be prepared for that, and to wait in line for the ferry for at least 30 minutes. Have snacks and water on hand and make a bathroom stop before you get there.
