The pandas and the RhkKmk's will be taking a road trip to NYC this weekend. It's our intention to eat at superb Asian restaurants. Of course, things have already gone off the rails. We intended on eating at SRI in Queens of Friday night, but Tengohambre reports that they are closed for the weekend. Coincidence? I think not! Bob and Robert exchanged a ridiculous number of E-mails to pick another spot. It's still unclear.

For Saturday night, we're having dinner with an anonymous Fodorite. She has vasciliiated numerous times on her choice of restaurants. I think she's decided on Chinese. We'll see.

The one thing I want to avoid is a long ride back with Bob in the pandamobile during which he's carping about the restaurant choices. Jean Paul Sartre could not dream up a worse car ride.

Any suggestions for Asian food in NYC will be considered, at least by me.

Andy - Here are a few suggestions for modern interpretations of Asian food...all very good (in my opinion!)

Momofuku Ssam Bar - East village
Bar Bao - Upper West Side
Fatty Crab - West Village/Upper West Side
Kampuchea - Lower East Side

If by Asain, you also mean Indian, then Amma and Devi are great choices.

Don't forget to take a side trip to the Bronx to catch first place Detroit versus the Bombers at the new stadium. Day games Saturday AND Sunday. Old Timers Day on Sunday - maybe Bucky Dent will be playing. Asian-themed food stand "Soy Kitchen" to keep in topic with the thread.

For the non-New Yorkers, a hotel in New Jersey for a trip to NYC is akin to having a hotel at the airport when the conference is downtown. Kimball's Folly.

No, Einstein found a good deal on Priceline. Of course, the hotel prices in NYC are rock bottom during the summer, but I guess we can save the $30 and get to travel a lot through the Holland Tunnel. Therefore, each morning, instead of walking outside the hotel and buying a bagel, we can hunt waterfowl in the marshes of NJ, if we're lucky.

Dim Sum, best spots are Mandarin Court on Mott St or HSF on The Bowery, just south of Canal St. Most of the other diners will be locals. Also Peking Duck on Mott St, was totally redone a couple of years ago and is better than ever. The Peking Duck there is amazing.

New Jersey is NOT New York, sometimes people get the two confused. I am sorry to say you will be spending ALOT of time in the tunnel, and spending more to park and for tolls than you will save in hotel.

Think of it this way, something you can remind him of for years to come.........

If you're coming all the way to NYC with a plan to sample Asian cuisines, you should plan on spending a lot of time in Queens and in particular, in Flushing- a part of Queens.
Manhattan has decent stuff but the Flushing restaurants almost always are more authentic and better than restaurants in Manhattan.

Since you are a fan of Thailand, don't miss Sripraphai in Woodside, Queens.

By the way Joe's Shanghai and Joe's Ginger both in Manhattan are outlets of the Joe's Shanghai in Queens.

For Indian food in Manhattan try Banjara and Saravanaas.
