hi we are a family of 4 from ireland planning a trip to either cancun or los cabos / puerto vallarta in mexico last week in oct .
what is the ocean temps for these areas.also whats the security situation like.
we need warm water to swim !!!

You will probably get the warmest waters for swimming in Cancun.

You'll definitely get the warmer and more placid water in Cancun in October. Water temps will be pretty high still in October. That's still hurricane season (technically, though they are relatively uncommon at that time of the year).

The Pacific is much colder, and the water in Puerto Vallarta is pretty wavy. It doesn't have the same crystal clear water that's found in Cancun. Water in Los Cabos is both cold and dangerous; it's not really possible to swim there, though more experienced swimmers go out on the water, but at most places it's not really safe.

In terms of crime, these are probably among the three safest places in Mexico for tourists, particularly Los Cabos.

There are no safety issues for tourists in any of those three places. Cancun will have the nicest water, since it is the Caribbean. Puerto Vallarta is my favorite city because I find it more 'genuine' with more to see and do. In Cabo you can swim at Medano Beach where many of the hotels are located.

From what I have read the water in Cabo gets into the 80's around September/October. Most of the year though it is quite a bit colder than the Mayan side. I've also read there are swimmable beaches like Medano and further toward the east cape where the water is also warmer. I have not been to these areas (only once briefly on a cruise), but I'm only going by what I have read from other people.
