multi-generational family trip to CR at Xmas - suggestions?

I'm hoping some fellow Fodorites will be able to help me with suggestions for a Christmas vacation in Dec 2010. Our group would include grandparents in their 60s, parents in their late 30s-early 40s and half a dozen kids aged 8-11.

A few of the adults have issues with special diets (medical reasons), stamina and mobiility - not able to do sporty activities like hiking, riding, ziplines, etc. They'd be spending a fair amount of time at our accommodations - resting, dining, reading, hitting the beach. Access to a fridge or very accommodating dining room would be good!

The rest of the group would want to do day trips or overnights to do active stuff.

I was wondering if there would be a good place to use as a 'home base' - preferably a resort w/kids' program, but with so many cousins to play with, it's not strictly a requirement.

I'm all ears for any suggestions!

I'd go with Manuel Antonio and check out either Tulemar Bungalows or Buena Vista Villas. Lots of great restaurant choices in the area. Easy access to pretty tame wildlife.

We did a multi-generation trip to Costa Rica a few years ago. Loved it!! Check out my trip report. I think the best part was having a driver to take us around.

qwovadis -> You're right, I didn't mention numbers as we're not sure yet. Right now we're looking at 5-6 grandparents, 6-7 adults, and 5-6 kids.
Budget - moderate, I guess. Not over the top expensive, but something which will be pleasing to all, w/hot water, clean accommodations, kids programs etc.
I'll check out the links - thanks for those!

Surfsponger -> Thanks for the info, will check out the community link.

misha2-> Will look for your trip report. A driver sounds great!

With that many people you might consider Club Med Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic. The Club Meds have great programs for kids and teens, and it's as much fun as an adult only resort for the adults. That's the only all inclusive I'd ever go to.

shillmac hasn't chimed in here but I think she might recommend Flamingo Beach Resort, although she always says don't do the "all inclusive" as there are better options for food near by.

Shooie--> Thanks for the recommendation, but we're definitely interested in Costa Rica for this trip.

hipvirgochick--> I'll check out the Flamingo - although the price difference btw an all inclusive and hotel times 10-16 people seems to tip me towards doing food and activities separately...haven't priced out much beyond a quick Expedia or bookit check though!

Hey Jaysfan,

We did this trip last year with two families. A total of 13 of us. I'm taking my 60+ parents with me this year to the same place. I cannot say enough good things about this place. It is a Jungle reserve with pool and a house that will sleep up to 18 and extra garden apartment rooms that will sleep more.

There place has about 60 acres and rivers, waterfalls, jungle, etc. It is great for kids but there are not any programs designed for kids. You can do either all inclusive or buy your food and prepare it your self or a combination of the two. I met the owner and he is very flexible and will accommodate almost anything to help you out. You can make your own menu for those with diet problems.

It is in the mountains but only about 30 minutes from Playa Dominical. Base weekly rent for about 10 people is $1900-$2200 depending on the season and I'm sure xmas is a premium but very reasonable when you compare others of the same scale. Check out the website for more info. http://losairescr.com/ You can write back to me for more personal info if needed.

We also did a trip a few years back with all of us and stayed in Manuel Antonio. There is lots to do for kids there as well. We loved it but it is rather touristy. My parents went with us on that trip and they enjoyed it but the beautiful house we rented there had a lot of stairs so watch out for that if some in your party have trouble negotiating stairs.

Good Luck!
