Wow! Does anybody know of a high end NON AI Playa del Carmen hotel?
My wife and I love to travel. We have alway enjoyed staying at nice hotels and finding equally excellent restaurants. I am starting to research a short trip to Playa del Carmen. I have spent about 3 hours on Fodors and TripAdvisor and must be doing something wrong. So far, I cannot find any high end NON AI hotels. Plenty of high end AI.
Can somebody help me with names? Think I would prefer close to downtown, ideally on the beach. However, now would just love to have a name or two. If such an animal does not exist, certainly will have plenty of beautiful AI to research.
Thanks for your assistance.

Banyan Tree Mayakoba, Fairmont Mayakoba, Mandarin Oriental Mayakoba. About 15 minutes north of PDC. Unfortunately, no real high end hotels right in town...
Maroma Hotel is supposed to be wonderful. (Not Secrets Maroma, which is an AI)
Good Luck!

Phillip,
Try the Gran Porto Real. We were there 6 years ago. It is a 3-4 star place but the location is Excellent! Also they have a sister place which should be nicer. GPR does offer AI but we were on an EP back then and found some great places to eat on 5th Ave and up on the highway. We prefered being in town rather than 20 minutes away. I am not sure if the resort is still holding up it's status, check Trip Advisor. If you go be sure to eat at the Monkey Cave (Cueva de Chango?) and The Oasis (on the highway, execellent shrimp tacos).
