3 of my friends and I are planning to spend 2 nights, 3 days in Mexico City next year, and I'm in charge of finding the lodging. We are looking for a location that is close to a variety of activities and a great food market. We are less concerned with awesome amenities (we don't need the Hilton or anything) than we are with safety, air conditioning and cleanliness. What are your favorite areas and hotels/apartments to stay in when in Mexico City? Thanks!

A/C is not really necessary at that altitude. I love the Majestic on The Zocalo but be sure to get an outside room. The Cathedral is also in the same area & is very popular as a bargain destination.

Casa Gonzales, in the Zona Rosa, is a beautiful little B&B, hidden behind a gate and easy to miss. Through the entrance you'll find a warm welcome, delightful courtyard, friendly office with internet, charming rooms, and delightful 16 choice breakfast menu. We were impressed at approx $45 per night.

Stewbear- I didn't realize that Mexico City was high enough up that altitude would cool it off. I guess I need to go look at my topographical map- thanks for the info, it will help out a lot!

believe it our not (and against your stated preferences) I would recommend the Sheraton Centro Historico. Awesome!

Mexico City sits at 7,800 feet but I find that AC is important, if for nothing other than cleaning the air. Without it rooms get musty and the polution, although improved, is still bad. I also like the Majestic, Casa Gonzalez and Sheraton Centro Historico, but my preference is the Geneve Calinda (known locally as the Genova). It is in the Zona Rosa, one block from Insurgentes Metro Station and close to my favorite restaurants - Bellinghausen and La Fonda El Refugio plus many others. From the Insurgentes Metro Station, you can get any where in the city.

And you'll want to, to get away from the crummy Zona Rosa. (Think of a run down place where the rat pack might have thought it cool -- in 1960.)

However, Fonda el Refugio is worth a *brief* visit to the Zona.
