where to explore in PDC area with rental car
We (family of 4, kids are older teens) will be spending a week in PDC at Xaman Ha condos. We'd like to rent a car to do some exploring. We've been to the area before and have visited Tulum, Puerto Aventuras, Xel Ha, Cozumel (rented car and drove aruond island), and Chichen Itza. We are looking for something different. We're not interested in Xcaret.
Any suggestions? ANy not to miss cenotes? Coba? Other towns?

Definately Coba and after that, Gran Cenote - located on the Coba Rd; you'll see it on your drive to Coba.
The ruins of Muyil are located south of Tulum on Hwy 307. There's an interesting boardwalk and observe tower in the jungle. And two cenotes on your way - Cristiallano and Escondido. Gran Cenote is better, though.
Hiring a snorkle boat from Akumal Bay - they know where to go and spot turtles, etc to snorkle with.
If you feel like doing a tour - the Alltourantive tours are action-packed and awesome. Teens will really like them.
There's ziplining near Puerto Morelos - called Selvatura and a cenote at the end of the line.
A tour of Sian Kaan with Cesiak.
Definately get the maps that Frankie suggested.

how about yal-ku lagoon in akumal for snorkeling. its cheap, go when they open at 8 for clarity.
or the tiny ruins across the 307 from xel-ha where you can still touch and walk around on the ruins.
you can drive part of the way to punta allen in a car (to boca paila) - to get the whole way down you need a jeep. very pretty & a few deserted beaches on the way.
oscar and laylo's at soliman bay beach is a really cool place to eat dinner - they do family style dining.
dos ojos is a cool cenote. but if you head south on 307 between pdc and tulum, you will see lots of them. hidden worlds is supposed to be good. here's a link to an article about it: http://www.locogringo.com/past_spotl...oct2005.cfmand and there's a great one called manatee cenote on tankah bay beach, but you must go with a scuba guide.
if you go to coba - the road from tulum is a good one and of course go as early in the am as possible to avoid the heat. apparently you can get a rik shaw (sp?) kind of thing to take you around this very large site.
you can do jungle atv tours, iffy if it's been real dry - or wear goggles and a bandana mask. how about horseback riding through the jungle out onto a beach... or the zip lines: http://www.locogringo.com/past_spotlights/apr2005.cfm 2 companies offer zips: selvatura and alltournative
check out www.locogringo.com for tons more info and links to both.
and you can also get the maps from www.mapchick.com laura's site has info besides the very useful maps.
