Depending on where you will be staying, there are several options. Some of the things that we have enjoyed are:

Museo de Oro (gold musuem)--underneath the Plaza de la Cultura;

The Teatro Nacional--same area--good to go in and look around. Very state of the art--you might be able to catch an evening performance

Mercado Central (Central Market)--west of the teatro a few blocks down the pedestrian mall (Avenida Central)

El Pueblo--about a mile north of this area--several restaurants, bars, discos, and shops

There are several popular afternoon tours. It depend on what time you arrive though. There is a San Jose evening city tour that goes to some muesums. There's the Cafe Britt tour of their coffee farm. If you get in on a Wednesday or Saturday, the evening folkloric show and dinner at the Ram Luna restaurant is pretty need.

A friend of mine does private excursions (but they're not cheap) www.motheroceantours.com that you can custom design.

If nothing else, the nightlife in San Jose is a lot of fun for the young at heart.

Hi
shillmac gave you the names of some nice places to see.

Let me add a few more and keep in mind that you can walk to all of these places.

1.The Morazan Park ( thye spell it Parque)...this is at Avenida3/calle6 and runs for about 4 blocks/
Lovely building here and a nice water fountain supported by cherubs.

2. Right behind the Teatro National Bldg that shillmac mentioned is the famous Plaza de Cultura...this is one of San Jose's best people watching places.. in case you just want to sit and have a drink.

3. The Jade Museum.... this is on Avenida 7 and Calle 9.
If you go here , the museum in on the 11th floor of a government building ,BUT make sure you the city from the 11th floor before you leave..great views of the city from here.

4. Also , one more idea, you can take a taxi and ask him to drive you intothe Amon district ,you are only 8-10 blocks away from where ever you are and have him tour you through this area to see some of the nice old restored home.

Anyway , that should be enough ideas for now.

Zoo Ave is a good place to see many of the birds of Costa Rica and is only about 10 mins from the airport. Depending on where you are staying, you could drive up into the mountians to La Paz waterfall gardens(about a 1 hr drive from the airport).
The central market in San Jose is an absolute assault on the senses but I love going there. Having a drink on the plaza at the Gran hotel is a great place to people watch.
