Water quality in Cozumel

We are leaving on Monday and I would like to know your experiences with drinking water. I plan to drink bottled water instead of tap water but I am concerned about ice in drinks. Should we avoid the icy blended fruity tropical drinks and stick with beer or wine?

Thanks.

Unless you are way off the beaten track in Mexico, most bars and restaurants get their ice delivered on a truck in plastic bags from the purified water/ice factory. You can tell by the shape of them.

P_M, I only specifically know Puerto Vallarta (also Cabo and La Paz) but I'm guessing it would be the same in Cozumel?

We spend a month in Cozumel every winter and have for 20 years. The water and the ice are fine. You will not have a problem. Ice is made with purified water. Do drink bottled water - not the tap water in your hotel. Don't brush your teeth with tap water, either.

I do want to mention that there is a big difference between those of us who have been to the island repeatedly and first timers.

"Tourista" is caused by bacteria in the intestines. We all have bacteria in our intestines all the time. It doesn't make us sick because our system is accustomed and doesn't react. The sickness is brought on when a "new" bacteria is introduced to our system. So those who have been eating and drinking water on Cozumel for awhile, already have that natural tolerence built up. It has nothing to do with whether food or water is "good" or "bad" --- its just the difference between our homegrown bacteria and newly introduced bacteria.

That is why its good to take a few precautions on your first trip. Some people take a Pepto Bismo tablet each morning. Make sure you have some Treada (available at the Mega pharmacy) or Cipro (from your doctor at home) along. Use it at the very first sign of trouble. Be careful eating raw or unwashed fruits and vegetables. Don't drink tap water. If you get sick, seek out Dr. Picolo. He is a wonderful English speaking doctor on the island. Don't try to tough it out.

The good news.....after a couple of visit to the island, your system will be good with anything. No worries

Thanks for your responses, this is very helpful. I hope we don't need Dr. Picolo but I will keep that in mind if the need should arise. I'm so glad I can look forward to my icy fruity tropical drinks from the hotel bar.

Reporting from Cozumel,

We have been here since Monday enjoying good food, great service and icy, fruity tropical drinks . So far we are well, but I am anxious to see how my stomach holds up on the submarine ride later today. Motion sickness is not my friend, please cross your fingers I will not hurl while we are 100 feet below water. Cozumel is incredible.
