Washingtonpost Article

Hello all,

I was reading this interesting article on washingtonpost.com called "Lending a hand to argentina's protesters". It was about Matanza movement. La Matanza is an organization that has launched a "receptive tourism" program that invites foreign visitors to volunteer at its bakery, preschool, sewing workshop and flea market, all located in a crowded, 16-block neighborhood.

From what I understand, young activists pay a small fee to spend their summer break, living and working among Argentina's piqueteros, or picketers - the protest marchers who fill the streets since the country's massive economic collapse in 2001.

Apparently, some of these students participating come from a program in N.C. university. I was wondering if anyone on this board has heard anything about these receptive tourism programs or ever participated in one...

The link: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn...072401093.html

Thanks,

Annie

Annie :

I read it a few days ago in "La Nacion" newspaper here in Argentina, was the translation of the Washingtonpost article.

The Piqueteros Marketing is very strong and gov. and some politicians support them, Incredible Argentina!

Piqueteros , with their faces covered and with threating sticks sometimes can get violent while cutting traffic in roads / highways.

DD from the forum will probably know more than me.

Yes i can understand you ... should be a conflict ! Butīs not.Piqueteros even get police protection , not the Buenos Aires cityzen that wantīs to reach in time to his job. Many piqueteros get $ 150 for a so called " working plan" , that working plan is go and do Piquetes.
While in BA ask taxi drivers what do they think about Piqueteros !!

A different and not violent face of poverty are "Cartoneros" , that also receive some Gov.help.
The Plan trabajar ( $ 150) , but this poore people are working at night collecting card board on every block in BA.Porteños even help them if they can ....you will see 6 / 10 years kids and families collecting card nboard in BA.

There is a "Cartonero" train free of charge for this poor people , its very sad to see it ....but this people should be helped as they are trying to make a living. Not as Piqueteros that are trying the same but complicating everybodys life .

Yes , nowadays they get the $ 150 IF they support gov. plan, a month ago ,our president pressed Sheel Co. not to raise oil prices through Piqueteros that didnīt allow some Gas stations to deliver ....

Originally Piqueteros movement started after 2002 crisis , but with other targets.Basically unemployed demanding for jobs.

Now its a diffent story.
