Villa La Angostura
Considering spending 5 days over Christmas in the Argentine Lake District. Villa La Angostura seems to be a more scenic/less touristed base than Bariloche. Is this accurate. Does anyone know Hosteria El Faro and whether it is preferable to Las Balsas for honeymooners? Thanks.

hi nbears
i am writing from villa la angostura right now! I apologize if I make typos - keyboards are just a little different here.
My husband and I are on our honeymoon as well. We spent one day in BA (to connect) and then flew to Bariloche, rented a car and drove out to Villa La Angostura. From what I can tell, Bariloche is very built up and more of a real city, with movie theaters and malls and higher buildings, which makes it not as scenic but a better more central base for outings. Villa l.a.is very scenic - the village is really one street and more for tourists than anything, but it is all done very nicely. We are staying at the Hotel Correntoso, which we like a lot - could not afford a suite but our lake view room is amazing to us and we have a stellar view. There are outings you can do up here as well - the one caveat is that today, for example, it is pouring rain and there´s not much to do - the shops all have the same exact thing - which is why I am spending part of my honeymoon answering your question! However, I would still recommend Villa l. a. over bariloche, and also the place we´re staying for the hotel - they are just so nice there.
Good luck!

I just got back from a week long trip to Villa la Angostura. It's a really beautiful city. I recommend if you go you go with your girlfriend or significant other. It's a really romantic town. I stayed at the Posades Hosteria and it was really great. The staff was great and I had an amazing Lake front view room. I believe the price was about 360 + 21% tax so something like 450 pesos per night. Well worth it.
There isn't a lot of nightlife there. Great restaurants though. You definitely have to try La Camorra. It's Located on Cerro Bayo 65 Local 3 #02944-495554 They had amazing stuffed mushrooms, fried clams, great salads and good pastas. We ended up eating here 3 different times of our stay. It was great! I loved it so much there I started shopping for some land to buy. I plan to spend more time down here.

We also are considering a week in the Lake District at the end of next April. We also have decided on Villa La Angostura over Bariloche. We are having trouble deciding between Hosteria El Faro and Hotel Correntoso. Both their websites look wonderful. Looking for advice.

Even for the locals V la Angostura is better than Bariloche. Prices are higher but the area is worth the difference.
If you are looking for a place to relax, V.Angostura is THE place but if your intention is to visit the lake area and make all the possible excursion, Bariloche is better.
Prices are a bit lower and there are wonderful places that guarantee a good stay. just see LLao Llao,(nothing can match that place) Nido del Condor, rupu pehue, la Cascada, etc.etc.

Hi, Villa La Angostura is a lovely place actually it is facing Bariloche on the other side of the same huge Nahuel Huapi lake. You can go from Villa LA to Bariloche and vice versa by water or by car or bus around the lake.
From Villa there are good buses that link Argentina and Chile.
Only place I know is Las Balsas but I am sure there are very nice accomodations elsewhere. Good luck. THis is spot is used by up scale Argentineans and has great rest. one of them is owned by the brother of Pricess Maxima of Holland. As you know she is a lovely Argentinean and as far I have read in magazines she and her husband the Crowned Prince love the South of Argentina and often visit it incognito.

We are planning on 4 days/nights in villa la Angostura in September/October but are having problems deciding on our accommodation. Our choices are Las Balsas, El Faro and La Escondida. Another travel site complained that the standard rooms at Las Balsas are too small for a longer stay. Can anyone confirm that? Some of the rooms at El Faro come with a lake view and a wood burning fireplace. La Escondida is simpler and priced accordingly. Any personal experiences and recommendations would be greatly appreicated!
