two restaurants in Buenos Aires

My friend is going fly-fishing in southern Argentina in January, staying in Buenos Aires for two nights, in Recoleta.
These guys want two good restaurants in which to eat, that are very good but not fancy or expensive.
I have told him that people on this forum will have the answers.
They will only have casual clothes, jeans and suede jackets, which I think would be OK for most restaurants, is that true??
Many thanks to the BA experts in advance.

It will be boiling hot in January so the suede jackets might not be needed.
Jeans and a shirt with a color , sleeves rolled up will get them in just about anywhere.

My tiny list because this city is full of all sorts of good places to eat..

Tell them to hop in a taxi and go to San Telmo and eat at Amici Miei.

In Recoleta... tell them to go to Juana M ..

For totally casual local, go to the Rodi Bar on the corner of Ayacucho and Vicente Lopez.

Or take a taxi to Palermo , to Guidos Bar... they will love this place.. trust me.

Hi Betsy - We ate at a neighborhood restaurant in Recoleta called Brut Nature (Peña 2066) and absolutely loved it. We noticed it's getting harder to find good restaurants that aren't charging touristy prices. This place is one of them. If your friends understand spanish, here is the best known restaurant guide in BA: www.guiaoleo.com.ar

If you're only going to have 2 meals in BA, at least one has to be steak. Campo Bravo is a very popular place and there's often an hour long wait at dinner time, esp on wkends. Cabana Las Lilas is one of the best steak houses there but too upscale & stuffy for your needs... but the food is amazing.

Gran Bar Danzon is another nice restaurant & bar lounge.
It isn't stuffy but is somewhat expensive for BA. So, while you don't have to wear a jacket or dress up, don't go there in shorts and a T-short either.

Hi Betsy! Don't have them go to Las Lilas. Way too touristy and like you are eating on a factory line; we went there on our last trip. One piece of meat was superb; the rest good, but not stupendous. the setting is great, though, on the waterfront in Puerto Madero.

In my research for our upcoming trip, some of the parillas that have come up consistently are: La Brigada, Don Julio, La Cabrera and El Trapiche. Also check out chowhound.com for good ideas.

Rodi Bar has a nice neigborhood feel to it and food is good. Didn't eat there but Don Julio's menu looked fabulous and always gets rave reviews. We did have a great meal at Amici Miei.

Thanks, everyone - all good ideas.
Skatedancer: Hi! When I was in Buenos Aires, we at at Las Lilas and enjoyed it, but I think the other suggestions are better for my friend.
Wish I were going back with you!!

I agree with Scarlett about Juana M. Casual and unpretentious but great food at an even better price. We liked it so much, we went twice in one week. It fully meets your criteria!

We loved Guido's Bar. Also we loved Guido. I highly recommend it both for the food and the dining experience.
