Going to be in Cancun in January for only 4 nights. Is it worth it going to see Tulum? What are best tour ops/bus tours to use? (We won't be able to rent a car).

I think so; both the ruins and the town. I don't know of any tour operators but I do know you can take a public bus from Cancun to the town of Tulum.

Yes, I'd go but then I'd rather be in Tulum than Cancun any day.
If you go make a day of it; hire a car and spend the afternoon at the beach there as it's gorgeous. I'd suggest visiting a cenote too but maybe it's too cold in January!?

Oops just saw that you don't want to hire a car. Can't help with tours but I'd try to find one that gave you plenty of time there.

Tulum is wonderful. The ruins can be done easily in an hour or two max. It's best to do that early anyway and a leasure afternoon at Pariaso or any other beach club south of Tulum will give you a whole new appreciation for how beautiful that area is.
Renting a car for one day gives you the most options. I would think taxi's would be very expensive from to/from Cancun. Maybe your best bet is to find a driver for the day and negotiate a rate. It would be a long day but very worth your time.

Tulum is worth seeing but I would go to Chichen Itza instead. It's one of the wonders of the world. There are numerous tours from Cancun.

Do you absolutely have to stay in Cancun-is it your airport of arrival, cruise ship port, or?
I know this has been covered before but..
I usually go to Tulum, straight from the airport - take the Playa Del Carmen bus and change at the bus station for Tulum bus.
The thing you need to know about Tulum, is that there are 3 Tulums
1) Tulum Ruinas
2) Tulum Town - not attractive - just a strip on the highway
3) Tulum Playa or beach
It takes aprox 2-3 hours to get to Tulum town by bus from the airport with the change.
An hour and 30 to 40 minutes by car.
The bus drops you on the highway in Tulum town where you would need to taxi to either the ruins or the beach.
If you are staying in Cancun and just want to see the ruins, a tour bus would be by far the easiest option.
if you want to stay on a truly magnificent stretch of beach, with very few other tourists, go at least 5 miles
in the opposite direction from the ruins on the beach road.
The best part of the beach is past Zamas.
I have talked to people who said they went to Tulum and it sucked...but on further enquiry it turns out they missed that whole stretch of beach - easy to do as it can't be seen from the road.
30 miles of untouched, powdery white sand beach with reef protected safe swimming turquoise ocean at your feet.
When you have the chance to be at one of the most beautiful beaches in the world......

While you and I may enjoy the serenity and seclusion that Tulum has to offer, it will far too sedate and quiet for most tourists.

Island Princess may be better off in one of the huge AI's on the beach at Cancun. When I was younger and needing non-stop partying, huge buffets, parasailing, jetsking, etc, Cancun would have been my choice.

We have already seen the Cancunization of Playa del Carmen. Let's hope it doesn't happen too soon in Tulum.
