One of the most magical places is the Pezulu Game Forest in South
Africa where the clients stay in thatched open-air tree houses with running water(toilets, showers),meals all served over open-fire(South African brae).Waking up to the smells and sounds of Africa will forever be ingrained into our hearts.Safe twice daily safari jeep runs(elephants, giraffes, water buffaloe, impala, lizards and the good old dung beetles) while basking in the quiet pool water under the intense African heat. Microlighting, hikes, hippo sightings, chasing wart hogs...Our kids ranged from ages 8-13 while friends'grandparents attended also(age bn 70 and 80!! Hats Off!)Hard to top this trip for adventure and soothing the child-loike spirit!

My overall favorite is Australia. Lots of diversity in Nature and culture. Haven't been to New Zealand yet to know if I would like it better.

Otherwise individual favorite sights are as follows:
Scenic vista- Napali Coast on Kauaii
Animals- Galapagos, Equador
Snorkeling- Belize
Old Cultural sight- Machu Picchu in Peru
Newer Cultural sight- Grand Palace in Bangkok Thailand
Big City- Barcelona, Spain
Small City- Antigua, Guatemala

So many things to see, so little time.

Punta Arenas, Chile.
The colors of the small houses there, the magnificent quality of air and sunlight. The Strait of Magellan right here, at your steps. The intersection of Magellanes and Colon (Columbus) streets. Thinking of this place warms my heart every day.

Crazy question! I love it! I also love the responses. My wife and I also travel and here are our two, considering the teens......: Costa Rica or Panama for "tropical Latino experiences" and I cried in the Forun in Rome as I sat for 3 hours and watched the "ghosts" of history walk the crater of civilization..........

Hi, Jen.
You probably have plenty of answers, but I'll add another. I have not traveled a lot outside the Americas, but I've traveled fairly extensively in that region for work & pleasure. Since you have four people, I assume cost is a factor. I also note you have teenagers. I would recommend Belize:
1) It has a large variety of activities and sights packed in a small country.
2) If you are from the U.S., there's ease of travel: English-speaking, they take US$, safe drinking water, same electric plug-ins as the U.S. From a crime perspective, with the exception of Belize City, it's fairly safe: the cayes are quite safe.
3) There's a lot of activities teens can participate in, especially if they can swim: cave-tubing [riding an inner tube on a river in and out of caves], other cave explorations, Maya ruins, snorkeling, kayaking, half-day resort diving classes, canoeing a jungle river, hiking in the rain forest, taking tours to see Manatees, monkeys, crocodiles & lots of other wildlife, swimming with eagle rays and nurse sharks (harmless). On Ambergris Caye, the town of San Pedro is very colonial-Caribbean looking, fun to wander, has streets of sand, & the common mode of travel is golf-carts (my teens loved this, although you're technically supposed to have a driver's license).
4) Although Belize is geographically in Central America, it's definitely got a more Caribbean look & feel. If you compare to other Caribbean destinations, the cost is quite reasonable.
5) There's a lot of diversity in the scenery, people, and culture. It's Caribbean, English, and Hispanic with a good bit of Maya, Creole, and Garifuna.

Wherever you finally decide to go, hope you have a great vacation!

After more than 6 years since the question was asked, Jen's kids are now 19 & 21. I wonder if they ever made the trip (I only read the most recent posts).

My favorite trip to date has been to Viet Nam (if anyone cares).

Happy travels.

Rural Normandy where I live. I used to like visiting far away places but now find air travel on flying cattle trucks too much hassle. Everywhere seems to be so crowded nowadays with people, tourists and motor vehicles. Concrete jungle is a very apt expression.

If I don't leave my house, I might be the last person on Earth for all I know as I see nothing but wild birds and the odd cat. I have to go shopping in the nearby village but am always glad to get back.
