Suggest some regions in Mexico

Where should we go for a one-week vacation in Mexico? We are interested in beautiful beaches, folk art purchases, authentic villages, archaelogical ruins. Night life not important. We are hesitant about Caribbean Mexico, since it seems more Caribbean than Mexican. Will a week in Oaxaca, with some of that time on the Pacific coast, meet our needs?

Have to knock out the beach life, it's not on the coast but check out
the town of Merida, Yucatán
Then using it as a base, rent a car and tool down the road to the famous ruins in the Yucatán peninsula. Local markets are great.
Little villages nearby where sometimes only a few
speak Spanish. I still hvae wonderful memories
of sitting at a table near a plaza listening to an old harper.
Also check out around Lake Pátzcauro.
I'm not beach oriented, so I'm suggesting the interior, Matter a fact, I'd just spend the week
in Oaxaca area, period.
Oaxaca is a lovely area. And for folk art you
go up into the villages around this city. Ruins galore,of course.

<archaelogical ruins> How important are ruins? I can't think of any off hand that are located near a beach town on the Pacific coast side. There are certainly wonderful small towns and villages both north and south when you fly into Puerto Vallarta, for example, but no ruins and I'm not sure about "folk art".

Oaxaca came to mind, but then it's not on the coast. I am not sure you can find all the things on your list in the same place. And one-week is a short time to combine two towns (i.e., going to Oaxaca then flying down to Huatulco).

I honeymooned last November on the Mayan Riviera... some of the things we did included Mayan ruins, Aktun Chen caves, cenote swimming, snorkeling, scuba diving, snorkeling in Cozumel, etc. It was a wonderful experience.

I have an album full of pictures from the Mayan Riviera, if you're interested, e-mail me for the link.

Here's my review of Aventura Spa Palace, where we stayed:

At the end are links to all my other reviews of the Mayan Riviera.

I'd just stay in Oaxaca. Plenty to do for a week. Unless you fly to the coast you will wast a lot of time in buses.
