Spanish translation please

While I realize this is not really travel related, I could use some insight here from a native Spanish speaker. Does "novia" mean girlfriend or fiancee? Inquiring minds need to know the answer to this question.

Amy, Your status may have been upgraded. Yes, novia means girlfriend but it also is used as fiancee as well as bride. Better check with your novio what exaclty he means.

I guess it depends on the country. Here in Argentina we all use "novia" and this means both girlfriend and fiancee. Where is the person who told you that from?

How confusing to have a word that could mean girlfriend or fiancee. The country in question is Peru. I was really just sort of curious. I heard relatives refer to me as "novia" but he usually says something like "enamorada" or something like that. I'm sure if there were a change in my status I'd be the first to know. Thanks for the help.
