Snorkeling at Barcelo Maya resort

I just booked a family trip here for February. One of the main reasons I chose this resort is because of the great beach and snorkeling available at the resort. I have read a few posts that say they brought their own snorkel gear. Is there any problems renting gear from the resort? Do they charge?

Also I've read mixed reviews on food. I'm not overly concerned because I don't expect great dining from an all-inclusive. As long as there is variety and the food is fresh, I'll be satisfied. Any recent visitors with comments? Do they have 'kid-friendly' (non-adventurous eaters) food at the buffets? My son still remembers that the food "just doesn't taste right" when we were at the Royal Meava (now Gala) 4 years ago.

Thanks for the info.

Hi Marj
My wife and I stayed at B.M. in april,LOVED IT!,I beleave you get the snorkel gear for one hour a day and you have to leave a deposit.Sounded like a hassle so we took our own, snorkeling was great around the wharf.
We found the food was really good I gained 7 lbs in 2 weeks!,lots of normal food your kids should be fine.Any questions feel free to email me. steve

Marj:
We went to the BM about 2 yrs ago and I just booked again. We really liked it. My 5 yr old really enjoys snorkling so we are all brining our own snorkling gear so we can snorkle anytime we want to. BM has great pier and tiny island that has some great snorkling. We saw alot of sea life there.

Both my kids last time ate the food there without any problems (10 mos old and 3 yr old). The buffet had a nice selection for the whole family. My kids left loving lobster, papayas, mangos, etc!!

Enjoy your stay.

I haven't been to this resort, but I am planning a trip there in the spring. I always bring my own snorkel gear because I know it is in good condition and I know where it has been! It is pretty inexpensive to buy your own mask and snorkel, so that way you can use it wherever and whenever you want! Have a great trip!

relax. you made a good hotel choice. we stayed there last march and loved it!
we brought our own snorkeling gear and were happy we did. people tend to check equip out (boogie boards, snorkel gear, kayak) and keep them near their seats instead of turning them in. also the check out hut was not manned all of the time. food was fresh and varied. our kids preferred the buffet over the restaurants. there is always fruit, pasta, cereal, etc if all else fails. By far, this hotel has the nicest stretch of beach from talking with other guests...very clean, warm, calm. We brought a banana from the buffet underwater and the fished swarmed all around. People on the pier got a kick out of watching from above! Have a great time!
