Chiming in late.. but I had to be sold on a mexican vacation .. had stopped in mexican ports on 4 different cruises about 7-10 years ago.. but wasnt sold..thought of crime, poverty, bad water, too much tourism etc..
However.. my then new hubby talked me into a mexican land vacation almost 6 years ago now.. and since then we have been back FIVE times .
We travel to the Mayan Riveria.. I prefer the clear blue water of the Caribbean side.
We have visited three different resorts and at none of them did we experience drunken louts or large groups of teens or spring breakers.
We do not visit Cancun , but fly into there .
I can recommend all three of these resorts.
Good food, purified water systems, beautiful pools, nice people, and amazing off resort sites to visit.. ( weve been to Tulum Ruins , several Cenotes, and ziplining ) .
Valentin Imperial Mayan was priciest ( but not unreasonable its a good value.. our favorite in many ways) and its an adult only resort, so you may wish to consider this as you are going on a child free holiday.
Grand Bahia Akumal ( there are four resorts in one.. just pick cheapest if budget is a concern, but the Akumal and Sian Kaan are the top notch sections ) . We have been here twice and likely wont return, not because we didnt like the pools beaches or food, but because the reservation system for the restaurants is stupid and annoying, both of the other resorts I mention have a no reservation required and unlimted A la Carte system we much prefer.
Grand Palladium (Kantenah) .. this resort also comprises of three hotels ( you can use the facilities of them inter changebly ) this one is our current favorite , bang for the buck.. set in the jungle, beautiful beach and pools, good food. Depending on rates consider any of the three ( Kantenah , Colonial or Riveria ) . They also have an adults only section but its pricier and I dont see the value since the whole resort isnt kid free just a small area that they are in ..
All three of these resorts are from 45-65 minutes from Cancun airport.. so no where near the city.. which we prefer, but are about 15-30 minutes from Playa De Carmen so easy to pop in there for some shopping .
All three are secluded and surrouded by jungle.. no beach peddlers to worry about ( they annoy me )
All three are sparkling clean, well run, and offer many options of restaurants and bars.
Easy to day trip to many intersting sites from them.
