Seeing the Nasca Lines

We expect to visit Cusco/Machu Picchu in early September, and will of course be going in and out of Peru via Lima. My question is whether it makes sense to try to take a one-day tour from Lima to fly over the Nasca Lines. I'd be doing it alone--DH has informed me that flying in a small plane making tight banks and turns is something he will not do. Does it make sense to do this on my own? First, can it be done? That other "F" guide book says the AeroCondor tour from Lima, the only one it mentions, has a two person minimum, although their website doesn't mention this. Secondly, would it be worth it? The tour seems a bit padded (I'd like to visit the museum, but a swim??) Thirdly, would it be safe, both in terms of the flight itself and of a woman going to and from the airport in Lima alone? (I've traveled alone before, but I confess what I'm reading about Lima has me spooked.) I'd appreciate any advice. (I'd really love to see the lines.)

My wife and I went to see the Nazca lines in 1999. We thought it was great, and a privilege only few have had. If you love history, mystery, and archeology, it is a must.

We left Lima early one morning on a small jet, took ?1 hr to Ica. Then a small prop plane over the lines, with viewing time of about 20 minutes. The plane banked right and left so both sides could see the lines. My wife got queezy, and missed a few. If your tummy tends to get queezy, take something for that. As for the safety of the planes, well, we take chances every day.

Then we had a bus tour of Ica, which was very good for the museum and resort. We did not go swimming.

I strongly recommend it as a memorable experience. I don't know how much it costs now, but we paid overpaid. It was arranged the day before in our hotel in Lima.

As to safety, you could have your husband go to the airport and see you on and off the plane, or you could arrange to have a reliable taxi driver (or escort) from your hotel to be with you to do that, if it would make you feel better.

Go girl, go!

Jed--thanks so much for your feedback. It's exactly the push I needed to go a bit outside my comfort level!

I just reserved the trip for August 26 (2 people). I would rather go on August 27 but they told me 4 person minimum and I could waitlist in case others sign up. I've seen many travel agent's list the one day tour but the description is so identical I think they must all go with aerocondor so it probably fills some. You dont have to provide all 4 people with your booking.
