safety in D.F.

So much crime talk - am going for a weekend, staying at 4 Seasons. Is it safe to walk around the Zona Rosa day &/or night? Is it safe in the Bosque De Chapultepec during day. Are tourists more likely to be victims? Thanks.

Yes, it is safe to walk around the Zona Rosa and Chapultapec. Crime is a very serious problem in the DF but I don't think that tourists are more likely to be victims. I don't have a single friend who lives in Mexico City that hasn't been robbed or assaulted whereas I, a visitor, have never had a problem. Don't wander around alone at night especially if you have a few drinks and might not be in complete control of your faculties, don't hail taxis on the street (go to a taxi stand at a hotel), use a money belt especially if you are going to ride the metro and just be careful and aware.

I would arrange for private transportation to the Four Seasons. My cousin does business in DF a lot and that is what he does. He has a private driver meet him and take him. They had problems with tourists being taken by taxis to remote parts of DF and being robbed. Check with the concierge at the Four Seasons and ask who they recommend or if they have service to the Hotel.

It is not that difficult to get a reliable driver for the day. Expect to pay somewhere around $150-$200 for a nice car and a driver to take you anywhere at anytime.

I have used this service in the past, and it was quite good:

Ejecutivo Santa Fe
55 5530 3003
55 5530 3004

The Zona Rosa is generally safe, but at nights it fills with people "promoting" strip clubs. Polanco is much nicer.

Chapultepec should be OK during the day.

Other than that, just remember to NEVER hail a cab from the street, be aware of your surroundings, don't use the "fishbowl" ATM's (surrounded by glass) and avoid flashy clothing / jewelery.

Chapultepec seemed very safe during the day. Great art museums and on the weekend you will be surrounded by lots and lots of families - what could be safer? We wandered around all day and always felt safe. There is a "Turibus" a tourist bus that you can ride around Chapultepec (it is enormous) to get oriented. For about $10 you can hop on and off all day and see all the sights.

One more thing ... Mexico city is like any other large city anywhere in the world ... you need to take precautions. Let common sense prevail -- this is not a frightening destination. Take cabs marked "sitio" don't take the green VW cabs. And I wouldn't wander around at night alone. Aside from that, this is a great city!
