safe transportation in Mexico City

Any suggestions about how to stay safe in Mexico City? My parents said their 2005 Frommers guide to Mexico said that several so called cab drivers had been mugging and even killing people (I didn't read the book, so they might be exaggerating). My parents will be staying very near the historic district, which I read is the safest place, but who knows when you've never been there. They want to know if there is a safe form of airport tranport (they don't like to use the computer!)

I staye din the Catedral area in March. The best way to ensure the safest ride possible is to use the "taquillo" (taxi stand). Purchase a voucher at the taxi stand inside the bus stations and airports.. The only places I hailed a cab outside was at the bus station in Patzcuaro ( very small ) and the ferry at Janitzio, no problems.

It is simple stick to radio taxis of reputable well know companies.
One of them is SERVI TAXI 5516602

Coming from Mexico Airport into the City, you have to buy a voucher at a kiosk from the representative of this company ONLY
SITIO 300 Taxis del aeropuerto 5785-8984
cars are white and yellow and have a plane painted.

but be careful, buy your voucher only from this company.

hotels also provide reliable taxis but somehow prices are a little blow up

For sure travel from the airport with a taxi for which you pay by buying a ticket at a booth inside the airport concourse.

For travelling around - take the metro. Perfectly safe. But like anywhere, best avoided during the rush hour.

Safety wise I found the metro (which runs from the airport) OK, BUT pick pockets use it. Even though I protected my pockets, on a crowded train I was pushed via people at the back of the crowd (a common tactic) and moved my hands to help myself and my pocket was picked.

Beware of theft throughout Mexico! I even had a little old lady steal from me on a bus.
