How safe is the Metro in Mexico City at night? We're staying with my son and his girlfriend who are living for a short time in Mexico City. So we have no hotel to hail an authorized cab for us. And our son is fearless. How about the rest of you?

We were there recently and found the subway safe during the day but the guidebooks did say avoid rush hour. If you check a few guidebooks they might tell you which routes (if any) are safe at night. Your son might know the nearest sitio taxi stand which is a safe place to get a taxi.If you are at a restaurant, they will call one for you.

I took the metro at rush hour and had no problem, and I did not restrict myself to the women-only cars (nor did other women). It's not worse than what I typically experience in other cities taking public transit at rush hour. Of course, make sure your valuables are secure.

I visit Mexico City fairly often, and have friends that live there (Mexican ) - and they won't ride the subway. From what I understand, there are specific stations (which, of course, I don't know which ones) that are extremely dangerous. Also, do not hail a green cab - they are not safe. What I would recommend is to take a cab from the airport (cab payment place is right near baggage claim - always pay before you exit the airport - don't hail cabs outside) - and get the guy's card. Then you can use the same cab for your entire trip. Cabs were pretty cheap... All the folks there that I know use this method for getting around the city... Mexico City would not be the place I would ride the subway - Paris, Bucharest, no problem, but not in Mexico City.

Mexican subway is not as dangerous as you may think, obviously... as in any other city of the world you must take care of your belongings. At night you can find many mexicans using subway because they go back home from their work places. And not all the green cabs are unsafe, the city is full of this cabs, and airport cabs are much more expensive than the green ones, so no problem about Metro in Mexico!

Never had any trouble on the metro, it can be confusing, you need to watch your stuff like a hawk and it can be really crazy during rush hour. The Pino Suarez station is notorious for pickpockets. Also I have been with a female firend and had to intervene when a guy was trying to grope her in a very crowded car. So, you can use the metro, but you need to keep your wits about you and eyes open. By the way, most restaurants, etc. will be happy to call a radio taxi for you if you are a customer. I would be inclinded to do that at night to get a around.

I rode the metro numerous times in the 5 days I was in Mexico City and never had an issue. The only close to negative thing I can pinpoint is the long transfers at some stations, but they usually have some sort of art or display in the hallways.

As a New Yorker, I am well aware of my surroundings and dealing with crowds on mass transit, and no one gets near my bag.

But, as a woman traveling alone, who fell for all the horror stories, I didnt go out alone at night so didnt take the metro. I did take 1 cab on the street when I had no choice and have lived to tell the tale.

Hidalgo is another station notorious for pickpockets. Try to avoid rush hour, and jammed cars at any time. That's when they can get you. Personally, I've never had a problem, but two friends I was with were relieved of some cash. At Hidalgo. At rush hour. What can I say? We'd been warned . . .
