Airfare is too good to be true on Taca/Lacsa within Central America. We're jumping on a fare to Roatan; however, we need hotel recommendations. We are young retirees, looking for possible investment opportunities in Roatan more than the party scene. Something close to restaurants but also a good flavor for the island. Mayan Princess has been recommended .. ouch $200/night a bit out of budget. Fosters in West Bay looks good. Any thoughts greatly appreciated!

I found it difficult to get information on Honduras... Anyways, I will be going to Roatan this Feb for 4 nts and will be staying at the Las Rocas Resort. It is on West Bay Beach, which I understand to be quiet and relaxing. The bungalow rates for 2 ppl are around $100/nt (includes contl bkft and airport pickup).

Check out Pura Vida Hotel in the heart of West End. Nice, clean rooms with AC, $50/night, excellent restaurant on premises. And because of its central location, you'll get a much more authentic feel for the island than you would at an isolated resort like Fosters. I just stayed at Pura Vida over the holidays, and loved it.

We stayed at St. Mac's Villa in West Bay Village. St. Mac's is probably too big for you, but I would recommend either Barefoot Dream or Mary's House as smaller choices in this little enclave. It is on the most amazing stretch of beach with diving and snorkeling right from shore. You can take a small boat to West End or walk down the beach to other resorts. We loved having our own house and it was a great opportunity to get to know people who live on the island.

PS: West Bay Village is only a short stroll down the beach from Island Pearl. We had dinner at IP one night. While its a great idea -- the execution wasn't wonderful. The accommodations looked a bit frayed and unfortunately the "gal from Montreal" who owns the place was constantly screaming at her work force or her kids. It was very off-putting. I wouldn't recommend it as a great place although their web site looks wonderful.

I used to be a travel agent specializing in dive travel. I have sent many people to Anthony's Key and they have all been happy. The food is good and there are activities besides diving if you don't scuba dive. They have horseback riding and a beach bbq each week. They also have a "swim with the dolphins" program.

My husband and I went to Roatan and stayed at Fantasy Island. The dive operation was great. The rooms were Ok and the food was horrible (not only was the food nasty, my husband and I both were sick from it one night. We ended up eating off the resort several times even though the food was included in our package) I have talked to people who have been there since we went and have said that the resort has cleaned up the act at the restaurant and the food is now fine. Fantasy Island also has the best beach on the island.

Just a word of caution about Roatan. If you do not scuba dive, there is little or nothing to do or see on the island. There are a couple of small, not very picturesque towns and the beaches are not that great. You can pretty much see the whole island in a couple of hours. If you don't dive, I would probably recommend Belize instead.
