Riveria Maya in May???
May 2004, we went to the The Gala located just below Playa Del Carmen. The water was a little on the rough side and was not crystal clear. We're looking for calm, crystal clear water. Is the water usually like this is this area? Is May a good time to go there? We just came back from Jamaica and found that May is not a good month to go there. We'd like to go back to the Mayan Riveria area, but want to go when the water is at it's best (of course, I do realize that storms can happen). Any suggestions for resorts with calm/crystal clear water is also appreciated. Thanks to all...

If you want calm water, try Cozumel. Since virtually all hotels are on the leeward side of the island, the water is crystal clear and calm as a lake. On the other side of the island, or the windward side, you will have waves like on the mainland, only more so.
Why was May not a good month for Jamaica? All the Caribbean usually has great weather in May and less tourists.

We were in PDC last Aug., extrelemly hot then, lots of people, but was fun for us. We stayed at the Rui Palace, nice place, nice beach, water nice, a few waves, not the calm pool sort of beach.
If calm is what you are looking for, and money isn't an issue, you might want to check out Cayman Island, very calm water, great beach, nice little island. Or, St. Thomas in Virgin Islands, they have a wonderful beach there, very calm and pool like water and at neighboring St. John. It's a little more expensive to go there compared to Mexico, depending on where you have to fly out of.
Good luck!

We're interested in the Mayan Riveria area. The water was supposed to be crysal clear and calm...were wondering if there might of been a storm to make the water cloudy/rough. We've been to Grand Caymand and the water is beautiful!! I asked a woman who lives in Jamaica about May. She told me that May is there rainy season and is not a good month to go. The prices are cheaper and less people so for us it works...

We chose Akumal because we thought it would give us the best chance of clear, calm water along the Riviera Maya coast. The main beach at Akumal is on a bay that is protected by a shallow reef.
We were there in Feb., which is not generally the calmest time of year, but we had fairly calm, clear water most of the time. We visited several other beaches and felt we had made the best possible choice.
One nice feature of Akumal is that there is plenty of sandy beach but also some pretty good snorkeling right there in the bay.
I agree that the west (lee) side of Cozumel would also be a good choice.
