look at tripadvisor.com and the hotel section here at fodors, and/or type in hotel names of both in the search box, and you should get tons of info.
The 2 hotels are probably the best in Cancun, the JW has the better pool and views, the Ritz may have better service and bedding...

Hi Laura,
We stayed at JW last Thanksgiving, it was a nice property, rooms okay, actually not great, just a regular room, nothing to write home about. The pool was nice, the beach fine, but I don't know if because of the time of year, but the beach seemed narrow and I would lay out as far to the left of the property as possible because the towers of the hotel blocks the sun early afternoon on the right side of the property. We didn't eat at the hotel, we opted to enjoy the restaurants that Cancun had to offer, we only had breakfast there, just a buffet. The consierge was helpful but depends on who helps you as to how much help they give.
JW & the Ritz are not in town, so you do have to take a taxi or the bus to get to town. No big deal, but just to give you a heads up.
We didn't go to the Ritz to look around but I think a few posts said that JW was better that's why we opted for it, but not sure on this and can't say first hand.
Cancun is nice, we enjoyed it, but I prefer Playa de Carmen myself and in fact are planning on heading there for Thanksgiving this year.
Good luck!

It's super easy and cheap and fun to get a bus into town. Check out fodors and frommers restaurant guides for good restaurants. Venture out of the hotel zone, and there are some great restaurants in downtown Cancun.
You'll have absolutely no trouble getting enough sun if you are staying at the JW during the summer ... you'll
be grateful for any shade!
I thought the JW's rooms were very nice, maybe not Four Seasons nice, but still very comfortable and immaculately clean with lovely bathrooms.
