They are both wonderful properties, and you would be happy with either, but the atmosphere at RC is a little more "old money" and a bit stuffy.
It doesn't have much of a Caribbean or Mexican feel to it.
The service at the RC is unparalled.
I would chose whichever you can get a better deal at since they are both so nice.

try for a suite at the JW! If you plan on spending a lot of time at the pool, the JW's is better, as are their ocean front palapas...
(the JW is also much newer...)

Fiesta Grand Coral Beach was on the Travel Channel's top ten resorts - along with Ritz Carlton but not JW Marriott. You might want to look into it. Never been to any of these - probably never will be. I like the all-inclusive in Playa Del Carmen. Good luck.

I agree with Diana and Frankie. The JW is the way to go. Great location, beautiful pool. Both have a "rich" feel, but the Ritz is a little overbearing I think. Meals/drinks are expensive! Not kid friendly resorts.

I think the reason the JW was not on that travel channel profile of the best of Mexico was that it had either not yet opened or had just barely opened when that show was first aired. (That show is at least 2 years old now). Be assured that the JW is at least as nice as the Fiesta Grand Coral Beach, and is in a much prettier spot, too.
