We are staying at the Hotel Lomas del Volcan June 1-3rd. I read a great review of it here somewhere on the posts. It is really reasonable (120.00 per night for three adults, including breakfast and taxes.

We just got back from Montanta de Fuego and LOVED it there. We had a great view of the Volcano and the location is ideal. Very close to Tabacon and Baldi. Excellent staff and easy to get around (the staff called us cabs, which were always quick). Free internet access in the lobby (via a designated computer). Grounds were amazing. I highly recommend!!!

I as at Hotel Arenal Springs in December, and it was great. It was unfortuntely cloudy and raining the whole time we were there, except the last morning, so I am not sure if you can see the volcano from the rooms. I know they have a big picture window in the lobby with a great view. The shower had a little garden inside, which I thought was really cool. The grounds were lovely - there is a whole little vegetable/fruit farm where they grow the produce for the hotel, and the workman gave us a whole pineapple right off the bush. It was delicious!

To 364oib --
Do NOT rent from Hertz in CR. We booked a 4 x 4 months in advance, then showed up and they had no cars. They promised to find another car at same rate, but sent us to Economy and didn't communicate the rate properly. I had to argue for 90 minutes and ended up getting ripped off anyway.
Our friends traveling with us also couldn't get the car they rented at Hertz -- they gave them a smaller 2-WD car, not the 4WD they reserved.

As for hotels in Arenal, we stayed at Silencio Del Campo, which we enjoyed. But if you have very active kids who want a resort type experience, not the right place probably. The hot springs at the back of the property are very calming and wonderful for adults, but they don't want people swimming and splashing in there (for obvious reasons). The construction next door wasn't a problem in late April -- the hideous hotel was nearly finished. But it's a blight on the landscape.
