punta del este beach question....

playa brava is on the ocean. playa mansa seems to be on a river... is this correct? which beach is prettier, cleaner, better to be on? is there swimming at both?

I have been to "Punta", as we Argentines call it, only once a very long time ago, because I prefer our beaches, but I'll tell you what I remember.

Both beaches are on the ocean, but the "Brava" has larger waves, maybe is more windy and of course you can swim on both. The "Mansa" has almost no waves.

Both should be nice.

If I went to Punta, I would probably favor more distant beaches, as these two are very crowded, particularly in January.

Avrooster:
we are probably heading to BA from NYC this february and want to add a beach. We were thinking of Punta but, would prefer to stay in Argentina, if we can.

What beach resorts do you recommend in Argentina? I am told Mar del Plata is not great. Are there any "resort" type areas or someplace with a good hotel? Thanks.

As avrroster said they are both in the ocean, one is "la brava" because it has wild waves and movement and the other is "la mansa" because it actually has none at all, that's why maybe you thought it was a river or lake, it seems to be. For swimming "la mansa" would be best because you don't get stumbled into waves and all.

Mar del Plata is a very nice city, but if you're looking for something else, maybe you can take a look at Pinamar or Cariló. They are smaller and cuter towns and so have resorts.

I like Mar del Plata, but it is a large CITY with beaches and many people may not like that.

However, north of Mar del Plata, along our coastline, there are any number of much smaller places, such as Pinamar, Villa Gesell, Cariló and many others.

Just south of Mar del Plata, you have Chapadmalal, where there is a very upscale resort called Marayuí
http://www.marayui.com/
run by an old friend of mine. If you are interested, I'll give you her e-mail and phone number.

I suggest you google all these places and come back with more questions.

That's true, not a place to relax and enjoy at all if you are trying to run away from the big city hectic hassle.

What I didn't like in Mar del Plata was the huge crowd (too many people on the high season)

Chapalmalal must be much more quiet and resort-like!

Mr. tengohambre: as part of my "homework", I have been reading some of your previous posts and I feel you definitely should try the Llao-Llao in Bariloche, maybe not on this trip but certainly in the future.

Read the reviews on tripadvisor.com, take a look at their website and make up your own mind.

February is a great month to go there. The temperature is perfect. You simply will not want to leave.

Top Buenos Aires expert dr_dawggy, whose posts you have certainly read here and elsewhere is going there in December and we should have a trip report from him late this year.

Avrooster:
I thought about Llao Llao and, I would love to go but.....
the family seems to be of one mind: they want a beach and warm weather. While Bariloche I know is beautiful (I was there many years ago), its not what they are looking for in February; and,
It seems Llao Llao's room prices are very high and the rooms very small.
So, get me back to a beach in Argentina, or Punta. I looked at the Marayui website and it looks terrific but, it doesn't seem to have a pool and is also not on the beach.
Is Carilo or Pinamar worth the trip? I assume I would need to drive a few hours or catch a flight? At that point does it simply make sense to head to Punta?
Gracias.

As any other hotel, the Llao-Llao has rooms of various sizes and prices. "Lake view" is more expensive that "Mountain view".

I don't know whether or not Marayuí has a pool, but I do know that from our (Argentines) point of view, a pool would not make any sense at all, since you have the sea. In fact, at this time, I can't remember any house near our beaches built with a swimming pool.

At this point, my suggestion is to fly to Mar del Plata from the Aeroparque (a very short 250-mile flight) and drive to Marayuí. Yes, Marayuí is NOT right on the beach. You can walk or drive to the beach. The map on their website indicates the beach is 1 1/4 miles away. Remember that this is a country club, with only ten rooms for rent, not a large resort.

In Pinamar, Cariló, Villa Gesell and many other beach towns north of Mar del Plata there must be resorts right on the beach, but I don't know them and I wouldn't expect them to be even near Marayuí's upscale level. That's why I suggested you "google all these places and come back with more questions."

BTW, Señor tengohambre, I've seen you asking similar questions a few days ago in a different tourism forum. Did you reach any useful conclusions?

Avrooster:
I am still in the planning stages of our vacation - and have only learned that there are lots of places in South America that I wish to travel to. I most likely wish to return to BA and then head somewhere from there - even Brazil, perhaps.

I used to be a travel agent - many years ago - and people in my office still ask me for travel advice. While I easily give it to them, when it comes to my own vacation it is much more difficult, particularly with kids in tow.
Gracias.

In the Tourism section of the Sunday issue of our leading newspaper I found ads of the following beach resorts:

www.cariloposada.com.ar
www.cariloalbatros.com.ar
www.carilosoleil.com
www.carilohills.com.ar
www.victoria-village.com.ar
www.cariloforest.com
www.villagedelaspampas.com.ar
www.lascuatroestaciones.com.ar
www.lamansiondelbosque.com.ar

This is just FYI. I am not suggesting any of these places and I did not even look at these websites. Some of these places even have a pool.

Wow, muchas gracias!

Saludos.

have just come back from Punta del Este. Not many people there at this time of the year.
have not stayed at the Bluette but saw it and really liked it.
Too pricey for ARgentine but good deal for other tourists.
Good option and to be recommended.

Hi , personally I would not hesitate to choose Punta del Este instead of any other Argentinean beach as I would not hesitate to choose Buenos AIres instead of Montevideo. After all, PUnta is full every year of wealthy and not so wealthy Argentineas that also do not hesite in choosing it.
It is an exciting resort, beaches are very nice being a large cape into the ocean it offers different kind of beaches. The water is nice and the strip of sand is wide and white. There are tons of things to do,including all sports you can imagine and casinos and dancing and good restaurants. Theater , shows and often a movie or two film festivals.
