Puerto Vallarta Hotel Question

Considering a trip to Puerto Vallarta and am interested in hotel reccs. I generally don't like all-inclusives.
For reference purposes, I have travled several times to Cancun and have enjoyed staying in hotels that are a little off the "main drag" (Westin Regina and the Camino Real) and haven't minded the longer bus runs it takes to get to the somewhat more active "zonas". (granted the Cancum Westin Regina can be a particularly long run to are populated areas, but rides of up to 20 mins are tolerable.)
From what I see Puerto Vallarta has a different layout from Cancun, so any guidance or suggestions are appreciated.

I ahve been to PV only one time and stayed at the Playa Los Arcos hotel in the romantica zone. it is south of the Rio Cuale river(ditch) and the Malecon. There are a ton of great restaurants nearby, the best public beach is right in front of the hotel also.

The Camino Real is your best bet, IMHO. It is located a short cab or bus ride from the downtown area, about 4 km south of town. It has the nicest beach, a beautiful pool, an excellent restaurant and a great staff.
Go for the Club rooms and get a buffet breakfast and evening cocktail hour. When you book ask if the "More Mexico for less " package is being offered. It included a free night the last time we stayed there.

just came back from PV over Thanksgiving week. Stayed at Camino Real for the second time, last time was March. It is the best location, stay at the club rooms which include breakfast and happy hour in the price. IT HAS THE BEST BEACH AND THE PROXIMITY TO TOWN IS GREAT.
