We are going to stay in the Posada Amazonas lodge owned jointly by Rainforest Expeditions and the Ese?eja Native Community of Tambopata for 3 days at late Nov. Anybody has stayed there? Any comments? Is mosquito a problem? Is anti-malaria pill a must? Thanks!

Anti-malaria is a must in that area. Talk to your doctor for the best option for you. Take a lot of bug spray with deet.

My friend and I were at Posada Amazonas in September, and absolutely loved it! The facilities, people and excursions were wonderful: You will have a great time. If you are only going for 2 nights and 3 days, I would highly recommend staying an additional night: 2 nights would be pretty rushed.
Anti-malaria medication is recommended. We didn't actually have any mosquitoes while we were there, but we were visiting during the tail end of winter so I think we just got unbelievably lucky. You should expect, and be prepared for, a lot of mosquitoes. A bunch of the other guests at the lodge actually stopped taking their medication during the trip, but I sure wouldn't want to take that chance. Ask your doctor about taking doxycycline, a type of antibiotic, instead of larium or malarone (spelling??) I felt more comfortable taking a low dose of antibiotic than the traditional anti-malarial: The possibility of psychotic episodes made me a bit nervous! You are required to receive, and carry proof of, a yellow fever vaccination for your trip.

BTW, what wild animals did you see at this site?

We saw 3 species of monkeys, capybara, giant river otter, agouti, a tree snake, a black cayman, a pirrahna, and lots of bugs and lots and lots birds including toucan, motmot, parakeet and macaw. My friends coworker, who also went to P.A., apparently got to see a sloth, anaconda and a fer de lance. Lucky girl!
