I am a 58 year old woman wanting to spend one month there in Feb/March 2009 mostly staying in hostels. I don't speak Spanish but hope to learn some basics by the time I go.What I would like some advice on please is would I be OK doing this trip alone?

You'll be fine, Lyndy, as long as you simply observe precautions which should be obvious for a female solo traveler.

Lyndy, my husband and I moved to Argentina, shopped for and bought a home here and live here.. we could not speak Spanish when we arrived.. ( not counting those easy words for politeness etc)... Argentines are among the nicest and most helpful people we have ever met.
I have a friend who comes here every year, alone and has never had a bad experience.. unless you count the way she feels when she has to go back home

This year when I was in Argentina, a member very kindly acted as tour guide and showed us all around for a couple of days. But more importantly, we didn't feel so all alone. There was someone we could contact if necessary.

I've met members from all over the world and it'a a great organization.

Very safe area. My wife and I and our daughter actually hitchhiked a couple times there last January when we were running late. The people are super helpful
