Panama with toddlers?

My husband and I are thinking about going to Panama in the spring for our anniversary. One of the things we are figuring out is whether or not to bring our two kids (our son will be almost 3, and our daughter will be 18 months).

If we do decide to take them, any recommendations for places to go? We'd probably go for around ten days, and ideally would like to stay in a places (or places) where we would have our own kitchen. We wouldn't really want to try to do too much, maybe visit one place for half of the trip and another place for the rest. Also we really don't like the bigger resorts, and while we obviously can't go too far off the beaten track, we want to avoid all-inclusive resort areas.

Alternatively, if taking the kids is a terrible idea, I would appreciate any thoughts on why! If we don't take them with us, we will just go for a shorter amount of time and leave them with my parents. Thanks for any advice!
