need help on how to get to Cozumel
I will be making my plane reservations later on this month for our flight to Cozumel. We will be flying on Alaska. Does anyone know if there is a flight to cozumel? We have not been there in over 20 years. After our week in Cozumel we will take the ferry to PDC where we are staying for another week & then the 3rd week in Cancun. Thanks for help in advance. Chris

We got on the bus right in town. It was pretty smelly and gross though - most others riding the bus had been out working out in the sun all day. Be careful coming back to Cancun. We were told even though the bus would finish up early, there would be plenty of cabs waiting for us to get off the ferry. Not the case! We came over on the last ferry of the evening and there were no cabs in sight. Another couple (from the ferry ride) had a rental and gave us a ride otherwise we would have been in an uptight situation. This was a number of years ago so a lot could have changed.

My husband had to fly back to the States for business in the middle of our holiday last year. On the return he missed his connection into CZM from Houston and had to do the Cancun/Playa/ferry thing. We had never done it before, we always fly directly into CZM. He was quite impressed with how easy the maneuver was.
So if you are flying into Cancun, but are staying on Cozumel the best way to make the transfer is via bus and ferry. The buses to Playa del Carmen (that's where you get the ferry across) are right outside the airport. They are big comfortable buses and even show a movie in route. The ride to Playa takes about 1-1.5 hours.
From the International terminal in Cancun you will go to the far end of the domestic terminal to find the buses to Playa. He said there are lots of people around to help with directions and information, so just ask. The best is to engage a "skycap" to take your luggage and let him lead you. That will only cost about $1 per bag and is worth it. Nearly everyone you will encounter -- especially at airports, ferry, bus, hotels, will speak perfect English, so its easy to get help.
Once at the bus location, you'll buy your bus ticket -- $11 pp. one-way. There are several buses outside - some going into Cancun, but they are marked well with electric signs on the front of each bus. Its easy to find the one to Playa.
The bus will drop you in Playa about 2 blocks from the ferry dock. Although my husband only had a small carry-on bag, he says that he's certain there were guys around to help with luggage if needed. The ferry ticket is $8 pp one-way and the ride takes 20-30 minutes. There are two ferries, what they call the fast ferry and the slow ferry. They both travel at the same speed, so just take which ever one is departing next. From the ferry landing in CZM, you will pull your luggage along the pier to a taxi line and then its on to your hotel. I would suggest packing light or in one big rolling bag so its easy to handle.
I think having a "car" (that would be a taxi) meet you at the airport and take you to Playa cost about $75. My husband said the bus was great - fast and comfortable - as well as cheap.

Thank you so much TC-I knew I could count on a Fodorite for help. We will be spending 3 weeks in that area-1st week being Cozumel-2nd week PDC-so that part will be easy. The 3rd week is in Cancun-We may just rent a car for the PDC & Cancun week. What airlines flys to Cozumel from Cancun if it looks like we will be arriving too late & also how late do the ferrys run??Thanks so much Chris

Here is a link to the ferry schedule, the last one leaves Playa at 11:00 pm. http://www.cozumel.net/1maps/ferry.htm
Like the other poster mentioned, the ADO bus is very comfortable and the bus station in Playa is only a couple blocks from the ferry. When I walked outside the terminal in Cancun I asked someone for the "ADO bus" and was immediately directed to it - easy. I took the ferry at night and it was fun, they even had live music.
The only downside to this transportation option from Cancun is that you have to drag your luggage a few blocks. And I don't pack light but it wasn't a big deal for me.

BeniciaChris, I'm not sure that any airlines fly between Cancun and Cozumel. There used to be a couple (Aero Mexico and Aero Caribe), but they come and go. I didn't find anything listed on Travelocity for the two city pairs. I'll ask my friends in CZM if there are any flights and post again.

An answer quicker than I thought -- Mayair is now flying between Cancun and Cozumel. This posted in December '08 on a reliable Cozumel bulleting board.
Mayair to Cozumel:
4 flights a day, 7 days a week. $75/one-way.
The Mayair terminal is to the far far west of the main Cozumel airport terminal. There is no signage, just drive past the main terminal and go as far as you can go. There is a parking lot right in front of the building. Once you get inside there is still no signage, so find someone to ask. Very small waiting room and check in area.
The planes are small with a front and rear prop. The captain speaks English supposedly gives a nice guided tour from the air.

I think the posting must have meant the Mayair Terminal is to the far west of the CANCUN airport -- not Cozumel. At any rate, if you use them I would ask at booking and then ask again for assistance at the Cancun Airport. The skycaps there are very helpful.

I just did this yesterday. Flew in to Cozumel and out of Cancun. The ferry has increased in price to 140 pesos and the bus has increased to 90 pesos. The bus runs every hour from terminals 2 and 3 to Playa del Carmen. It leaves you off at the corner of Juarez and 5th Ave. The ferry is to your right and down a block to the water. They had a nice band on board this past weekend. If you come over from Cozumel on the ferry you can get a pedicab to take your luggage to the taxi stand at the bus depot or hotel. Your luggage will be checked into the hold onboard the ferry and you will get a claim ticket to pick it up in PDC.

Thank you all-I knew I could count on you!! I have printed up both schedules. I can't makemy plane reservations until January 24th & at that time I'll find out which would be the best way to go. For sure we will be taking the ferry from Cozumel to PDC as our next week will be there. I am just anxious to get to our first place to settle in before dark. Its a timeshare trade & sometimes the earlier you get there the better rooms you get.
