Mexico City to Quito (16 weeks)
Hi, I was meant to be travelling from Mexico City through central America and flying home from Quito in May this year but this trip was cancelled. I have just booked my flights for May 1st 2021 and flying home on 20th August 2021. I know I am covering a fair bit of distance and lots of countries in such a short time but does anyone have any advice on some unmissable places?

It helps with suggestions if you explain your thinking in settling on this particular part of the world. What convinced you that this was a good plan for you, what stops have you imagined making already, what in particular interests you.

Hi
Originally my friend was getting married in Los Cobos in Mexico and I felt it was time to do another trip so was planning my trip based on starting at his wedding. But due to covid the wedding is now cancelled however I don't want to miss out on this trip so have decided to go anyway. I have done lots of travelling before and Central America is kind of the last big place I need to tick off. I am flying back from Quito as I missed Colombia and Ecuador when I did my South America trip a couple years ago. I do expect this trip to be very different from all my others with the Covid situation.
On all my previous trips I haven't really ever had an itinerary and have just gone and done whatever I fancied at the time. But this time I want to be a little more organised.
1st May I fly into Cancun and then I'm planning on spending a week there before flying to Mexico City. Other than my flight home on 18th August from Quito, I have 2 weeks volunteering with International Volunteers HQ in Costa Rica doing some Turtle conservation stuff booked. I am also going to book a San Blas tour to get from Panama into Colombia as this will cover the Darien Gap. Do you have any recommendations of places/things I cannot miss?

One man's 'can't miss' is sometimes another's 'meh'. But one obvious suggestion would be to start with the Mexico gringo trail of CDMX, Puebla, Oaxaca, San Cristobal (plus surrounding attractions of the aforementioned depending on your interests). Then mosey into Guatemala and maybe visit Xela, Panajachel/Atitlan, Antigua & Guatemala City. That might be a good springboard for the rest of Central America. Daniel Williams did a nice trip report here on El Salvador. Maybe search for it?
