Playa del Carmen, hands down! I prefer the Caribbean coast over the pacific side. The water is crystal clear...white sand beaches...ahhh.

Stay at the Royal Hideaway Resort and Spa. It's an upsale, luxury Allegro resort...all-inclusive. It's worth checking out!

hope this helps, and enjoy your trip!
Hotel Secreto or Media Luna on Isla Mujeres. Much more laid back that PDC...and NOT all inclusive. There are so many good places to eat on this island, all within walking distance to the hotels mentioned, or any hotel in the 'downtown' area. Hang out at Sergios bar on the beach for good drinks..and food. Best of all, there won't be any buffets and you won't have to fight dozens of people for a chair by the pool or beach! Playa Norte on Isla Mujeres rivals any beach around PDC.

Old Town Puerto Vallarta (southside). I have several favorite hotels, which one I choose depends on who I'm traveling with and the budget for that particular trip.
Tulum area, Cabanas Copal. Beautiful beach and ocean, hammocks and candles everywhere, no shoes - or indeed, clothes - needed. But this is not for everyone. Floors in the cabanas are either cement or sand; no electricity; cabanas are small and you'll be spending your time outside. For what I want out of a vacation, though, it's paradise on earth.

By far the Royal Hideaway Spa in Playa Del Carmen. EVERYTHING you ever wanted in a resort. Nothing in all my travels compares...

Agree with suze -- "the other side" in Vallarta. A number of good hotels located there -- mood really does dictate the choice.

Come and check out Centro Historico in Mazatlan. We are the best kept secret in all of Mexico. Bustling port city, historic buildings to die for, especially the Angela Peralta Theatre and the Plazuela Machado with all of the outdoor restaurants. You can have the nightlife or you can have absolute peace and quiet. The prices are still lower than the more "discovered" areas and we have it all. Give us a try.
Saludos de Mazatlàn.
