Has anyone been "burned" - not by the sun?

I was recently in Cabo San Lucas. A girlfriend and myself were at a bar/restaurant - and had 2 Margaritas - after which we were completely drunk. I can normally handle more alcohol than that. I have since heard that Mexico is notorious for "burning" people, especially single women, by pouring Everclear in their Margaritas. Has this happened to anyone else?

Thanks,
Stacey

I'm not clear on what you are alledging. How were you "burned"? What would be the motive for putting xtra alcohol in your drinks? You don't mention that anyone attacked you after. Are you alledging that there is a intential effort in Cabo to send tourists home with bigger hangovers then they had planned?

Maybe I should clarify. It is one thing to get the drink you ordered. It is completely another to have your drink spiked, without your knowledge. Fortunately, I just got very drunk, and had someone to take care of me. It could have been much more serious.

When I got home, and told a friend about it, he said the term for that was "burned".

I loved Cabo and would go back again, but I will certainly have my eyes open every step.

Yes I have. I have experienced some very strong drinks in Mexico and came to the conculsion they were using overproof alcohol. In Mexico the laws do not regulate the proof of alcohol the same as back home. I have heard of cheap distilled Tequila of 70 proof being used in Drinks.

A Mr. Simpson who posts here was burned badly in a four star hotel where he posted his drinks were tampered with, the result being his wife and him passed out after one drink at the hotel bar and woke up the next morning in their room. Luckly he had his stuff in a safety deposit box.

There was a posting suggesting the use Of Mind erasers{mexican valium} a drug put in the drink the set the person up for robbery or worse.
I have read on another message board that this is known to happen in Cabo bars where a little extra is added to the drink.

The State Dept. certainly knows about it for they have posted warnings:
"U.S. citizens should be aware that some bars and nightclubs, especially in resort cities such as Cancun, Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlan, and Acapulco, can be havens for drug dealers and petty criminals. Some establishments may contaminate or drug the drinks to gain control over the patron. Victims, who are almost always unaccompanied, have been raped, robbed of personal property, or abducted and then held while their credit cards were used at various businesses and Automatic Teller Machines (ATM).

Nancy's right...

And the most important part of the state department warning is....

Victims,....WHO ARE ALMOST ALWAYS UNACCOMPAMIED..., have been raped, robbed of personal property, or abducted and then held while their credit cards were used at various businesses and Automatic Teller Machines (ATM)

moral:

Stay with the group...especially at night.

We've been down to Mexico more than a dozen times. PV, Mazatlan, Coz, and PDC. We've danced till dawn, gotten a little drunk, and never had a problem like the state department warns of.

BUT, we are always in a group...the bigger the better. If the wife and I go down alone...we often meet "new best friends" on the plane to pal around with while we are there.

justjohn
